Neither side of the Philippine-American War one. After over 4,000 deaths and almost 3,000 wounded for the United States and over 200,000 deaths for the Philippines;they decided to make a compromise.

Conclusion

This long war went from 1899 all the way until 1902. The Philippines lead by Emilio Aguinaldo and the US by William McKinley andTheodore Roosevelt. In 1946 the Philippines FINALLY got their independence that they deserved.

February 4, 1899-July 4, 1902

Background Information:

The Philippines wanted to gain their independence and be their own country so they fought back at Spain to try to get to where they wanted to be.

Thesis:

The Philippine American War impacted many people’s lives. The Filipinos left a legacy and eventually gained their independence. This war will never be forgotten and neither will the ones whose lives were lost during this battle. After the Spanish-American war came to an end another war began shortly after. When the Spanish-American war concluded, Spain was forced into selling some of their property. In turn, the United States purchased some of these properties including the Philippines. Before this, the Philippines had long been trying to gain their independence from Spain. Therefore, they started a war with America shortly after they were purchased. This began the Philippine-American war.

Impact:

The short term impacts for this event are

  • Civilian deaths in the Philippines resulted in disease and famine.

  • The United States military created two service decorations which were known as the “Philippine Campaign Medal” and the “Philippine Congressional Medal”.

Build Up:

After the Spanish-American War Spain had to sell some of the places it controlled. Therefore, the United States bought the Philippines along with some other places and so instead of the Philippines continuing to fight Spain they started a war with the United States so that they could finally gain their independence.

Main Argument:

When the United States purchased the Philippines from Spain, it’s not that they didn’t want the Philippines to be independent. They just didn’t believe that they were ready to be on their own. The Philippines, on the other hand, thought the complete opposite. They thought they were ready enough to be on their own and control themselves. Therefore, they made the decision to start a war with the United States. During this war many lives were lost. Including lives of innocent, Philippine citizens. This was a sad time for the Philippines, with losing a huge fraction of their population. But they eventually made it through settling with a peace treaty that would eventually bring their independence.

Legacy:

The long term impact for this event is the freedom won for the Philippines. Though It took a few more years after the war, it still brought the freedom the Philippines deserved. Sadly, many civilians died in this war which caused a major decrease in population for the Philippines.

Rest in peace. We send our prayers to the ones who lost their loved ones.

We show our thanks to Emilio Aguinaldo for proudly leading the Philippines through this tough time and eventually earning their independence.
